Art Print - Mural Artists Proof
Montreal paid homage to Leonard and honoured his contributions to music and literature through a public artwork unveiled a year after his passing. Created by a group of artists with the non-profit MU collective, specifically El Mac and Gene Pendon, the mural was inspired by a photograph by Lorca Cohen, Leonard’s daughter, taken in 2008.
Over 1000 square metres in size, the mural graces a 21-storey building on Crescent Street in the heart of downtown Montreal and has become a treasured landmark in the city. The towering image of Leonard sporting his signature fedora with his iconic unified heart symbols in the background can be admired from various city locales.
Successfully creating this stunning tribute to Leonard required skill and teamwork from the artists. Internationally renowned artist El Mac (Miles MacGregor) specializes in large-scale paintings recognizable by their unique aesthetics utilizing a repeating contour pattern. Gene Pendon (a.k.a. Starship) has captivated Montreal with his vibrant and moving murals, including his tribute to Oscar Peterson, and his murals celebrating Montreal’s cultural diversity.
Photographer Olivier Bousquet has captured the mural from around the city. He finally selected this artists proof for the limited edition printing and commented, “Seeing Montreal emerge from behind the trees at the top of Mount Royal is a show that never ceases to fascinate me. To me, this photo is particularly representative of Montreal: the city, nature and Leonard Cohen.”
Issued in a limited edition of 100, each of these numbered artists proofs will be personally hand signed by El Mac, Gene Pendon and Olivier Bousquet and arrive ready for framing.
