Art Print - Kara Blake's Artist Proof
John Zeppetelli, director of the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) and his chief curator, Victor Shiffman, approached Leonard in 2015 seeking to mount an art exhibition of new works by prominent contemporary artists inspired by Leonard’s artistry. The result was Leonard Cohen: Une brèche en toute chose/A Crack in Everything, an exhibition of works created by local and international artists devoted to the imagination and legacy of this global icon from Montreal. Two of the contributors to the exhibition are Montreal-based artists Kara Blake and George Fok. Each artist personally select an artist proof from their exhibit to create a unique lithograph limited to a printing of 100 each. These gorgeous fine art lithographs are hand numbered and hand signed by the artist and arrive ready for framing.
Kara Blake's multichannel video projection titled “The Offerings” forms an immersive environment in which Leonard's singular voice envelops participants and engages them in an intimate conversation. Sourced from decades of archival material, the images and video construct a composite portrait of the artist as he muses on a variety of subjects ranging from his personal writing practice to universal themes of love, humility, and spirituality. “I wanted my piece to present visitors with a sampling of the creativity, wit and insight Cohen has gifted us with,” Blake explained. “Cohen was always an extremely humble man. He had a genuine curiosity about the world and his place in it that allowed him to consider and talk about the human experience in a very inclusive and heartening way.”
Kara chose a triad depiction as her artist proof. She explains: “The Offerings: Root, Third, Fifth brings together some of my favourite moments from The Offerings and exemplifies three key facets of Cohen: the writer, the musician and the public figure. Representing multiple decades, this triad delineates the evolution and range of Cohen’s rich career.”
